“Well, butter my backside and call me a biscuit.” That is the first thing LAYA says on “Yeeha,” before the beat even lands.
It opens warm and atmospheric, an open hi-hat crashing slowly underneath lush, well spaced synth notes, and you know right away this is not background music. Then the strings come in and the whole thing takes on a country flair without ever losing its soul.
It is four minutes long and never feels like it. When it ended, I was a little sad it was over.
LAYA’s voice never disappoints, and this is no different. It is fun, and it holds a very sexy undertone the whole way through. The bridge is a subtle switch up that lands right when a song this warm could have settled.
The artwork deserves a mention too. It is not a graphic thrown together to fill a square. It tells its own story.
This is the song that makes me believe the breakout is coming.
So Why Not Higher
Two reasons. The production is warm and simple, and that simplicity is part of why it replays so easily. It can also get repetitive. I kept wanting one more layer somewhere: the beat dropping out at the end of a verse, a different ad-lib, something in the background to keep building the scene.
And the story is specific. It is about one very particular feeling, so specific that it plays like a soundtrack cue for a scene I am not always in. That does not hurt the song. It decides how often I reach for it, and a year from now I am not sure how often that will be.
Still, “Yeeha” is the song that makes me believe LAYA’s breakout is coming. If this is the rollout, I want the album.
